There must be something in the water at Forth Worth Zoo. Over the last two months their giraffe herd has seen a boom with three calves joining the herd.
The success began on May 7 when Lucchese was born. On July 1st an as yet unamed male calf was born standing exactly 6ft tall and finally on July 11th another yet to be named female calf joined the herd standing 5ft 5″ tall.
On July 23rd the two newest calves joined the rest of the herd to take their first steps out in to the African savanna habitat. Here they got to meet the other animals such as ostriches, springbok, kudu and African birds which share their home.

Fort Worth Zoo maintain an active breeding program for the giraffe with 26 calves, including these latest three, born across their history.
The new African Savanna habitat they inhabit opened in 2018 and provides room for a herd of up to 18 giraffe allowing them to continue this breeding success.
Over the last 20 years the wild giraffe population has seen a decline of 30%. They are facing what has been labelled the “silent extinction” due to their perceived abundance.
