Reid Park Zoo in Arizona, United States has announced the arrival of a brand new species for the zoo. A group of African wild dogs will now be one of the first species guests see after entering the zoo.

The zoo’s pack of four African wild dogs have come from Oregon Zoo and are all females. Their names are Grommie (short for Grommet), Cricket, Terra (short for Terracotta), and Sandy. All four are siblings who just turned two on November 11.

“We are excited to share this new species with our guests and hope they will have an opportunity to watch them play. They all have distinct markings and we hope our frequent visitors will soon be able to distinguish each one from the other,” said Dr. Sue Tygielski, Director of Zoo Operations.

They are currently settling in to their new enclosure and have the ability to move between their on and off display enclosures. While they are adjusting to their new environment they are also adjusting to a new pack order. The dominant female, Grommie has not led a pack before and will need to adjust to being the alpha.

African wild dogs are also known as painted dogs or cape hunting dogs. They are noticeable for their mottled coloration and large ears. On the savannas of Africa they live in large packs which work together to hunt and avoid predators.

Currently these animals are highly endangered due to habitat loss, catching diseases from domestic dogs and being caught in traps.

“This species is critically endangered and faces considerable challenges in the wild. We are excited about this opportunity for our community to learn more about African wild dogs, their unique pack dynamics, and how we can support them in the wild,” Tygielski said.
