Animal Dads Celebrate Father’s Day at Wild Life Sydney Zoo

The animal dads at Wild Life Sydney Zoo in Australia have enjoyed special treats as Australia celebrated father’s day today. Fathers of feathery, fluffy and scaly creatures were all treated to special gifts from their keepers.

In the scaly department the frilled necked lizards were treated to crickets and Ronny the scrub python was able to explore a large present box. The frogs also received additional crickets.

The birds also joined in with honorary dad, Princess the southern cassowary being treated to a jar of grapes even though he is yet to sire any offspring.

Meanwhile for the fluffy animals Bilya the bilby was treated to extra scratches under the chin while first time koala dad Alfie received a bouquet of leaves and cuddles from his keeper, Marina. Alfie became a dad after the birth of his first joey, Ilani at the end of last year.

“Just like all the amazing mums here at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, dads play an important role in the continuation and growth of their species and we think that’s worth celebrating,” said Zookeeper Rebekah Hancox.

“We’re especially excited for Alfie to experience his first Father’s Day and to celebrate Princess, who may not have sired a baby, but as a male Southern Cassowary is critical for the incubation of the eggs and raising of the young.”
