Animals Enjoy Trick or Treat Fun at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

The Asian elephant herd at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo have enjoyed some trick or treat themed enrichment with keepers providing them a number of pumpkins to enjoy. Their squirrel monkey troop were also able to get in on the fun.

Keepers carved huge pumpkins befitting of the zoo’s Asian elephants. They were then able to use all their senses to investigate, play with and feed on the mammoth, creepy treats.

The squirrel monkey troop including a four-year-old male named Pumpkin were given small pumpkins to enjoy. Keepers cut the tops off of their treats so they were able to dig out the tasty seeds from the center of the pumpkins.

Guests visiting the United Kingdom’s largest zoo this halloween will be able to learn the weird and wonderful ways that animals feed at Terrifying talks. It is also the last chance to see Zoorassic Park the zoo’s life-size animatronic dinosaur exhibit.

Zoological manager Matt Webb said: “Our inquisitive elephants and curious monkeys love to investigate and play with new things, so they were thrilled with their terrifying treats. Lucha, in particular, was determined to hoard her ‘trick-or-treat goodies,’ kicking her pile of smashed pumpkins away from the others so she didn’t have to share her feast!”

Webb continued: “Our animals are already enjoying all the fun of the autumn season, and we can’t wait to welcome our members and visitors during half-term to join in all the spooky fun and animal magic that Whipsnade Zoo has to offer.”
