Monarto Safari Park is celebrating the first birthday of their southern white rhinoceros calf. To celebrate the birthday guests are being asked to guess the weight of the calf for a chance to win a Meet the Rhino Experience following the current lockdown in South Australia.

Eshe was born on July 23rd 2021 to mother Umqali.

Looking back on her birth in 2020, ungulate keeper Mark Mills said: “We knew her arrival was imminent and we were on tenterhooks."

“Eshe has been such a wonderful calf to watch grow. She has done her share of zoomies and thundering around with mum Umqali sometimes struggling to keep up with her."

“Eshe and the crash are part of the Meet the Rhinos experience at Monarto Safari Park with Eshe being a big drawcard."

Eshe is an ambassador for her species which continues to be threatened by poaching to fuel the international rhino horn trade. This horn is traded for high values on the black market due to a perceived medical benefit despite it being made from the same substance as human hair.

Monarto Safari Park are helping to conserve rhinos by bringing an insurance population in from Africa. Up to 30 rhinos will come from South Africa to Australia in partnership with The Australian Rhino Project, Taronga Western Plains Zoo and Orana Wildlife Park.

Orana Wildlife Park recently broke ground on their quarantine center for the rhinos moving to Australia. You can read our story on that here – Orana Wildlife Park Break Ground on Rhino Conservation Center
