Belfast Zoo welcomed a baby vicuna on November 26th 2021 as storm Arwen was sweeping across the United Kingdom. It can now be seen exploring its enclosure under the watchful eye of mom and dad.
As yet keepers have been able to determine the gender of the youngster. It is hoped that this can be confirmed in the coming weeks.
The fluffy new addition was welcoming by mother Aine and father Ozark. Zookeepers made the wonderful discovery the morning after the storm.

Zoo Curator, Julie Mansell, explains, “We were delighted to find the baby cosied up with the rest of the family safe inside the den. They are really beautiful, gentle creatures that were once at risk of extinction due to hunting for their wool and meat. Áine is an excellent mother and the baby is looking strong and well.”
Vicunas are the smallest members of the camel family. They were held in high regard by the ancient Inca population but suffered from hunting for meat and wool once the Spanish conquered South America.
This baby is the latest arrival as part of the successful breeding program for this species.
