California Sea Lion Pup Born at New York Aquarium

The California sea lion pup born on Memorial Day at the New York Aquarium rests on the rocks with mom

The New York Aquarium provided an extra show to guests on Memorial Day this year as their California sea lion Ariana gave birth to a pup.

As yet the pup is be given a name but keepers report it is happy and healthy.

“It is unusual for visitors to have the opportunity to witness the birth of an animal at the aquarium,” said Craig Piper, interim New York Aquarium Director and WCS Director of City Zoos.

“Aquarium staff were on hand to answer questions from the guests, and our keepers and veterinarians continue to closely monitor the pup’s development. This is a special birth that has been a wonderful experience for everyone.”

This is the first offspring for mother Ariana. She has proven to be an attentive and protective mother. At present the pair are bonding and as the pup matures they may not be on view for guests.

As yet keepers have not been able to determine the gender of the pup.

California sea lions are only species which live at all five parks operated by the WCS. These are the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, and New York Aquarium.

The aquarium operate a successful breeding program with five pups born since 2010. Individuals periodically move between the aquarium and the other four parks to maintain a sustaianable and genetically healthy population.
