Bronx Zoo have welcomed a Coquerel’s sifaka infant to their family. The male infant was born over summer and has recently made his debut in the zoo’s sifaka habitat.
The story of his birth was shared on the most recent episode of Animal Planet’s THE ZOO series. Viewers were able to watch as animal care experts at the zoo brought together the parents for the first time in hopes they would mate.
Bronx Zoo breed sifaka as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) program, a cooperative breeding program administered by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to maintain genetic diversity and demographic stability in zoo populations.

At the Bronx Zoo guests can meet six species of lemur in the Madagascar! habitat. This is also where you can meet the new arrival. His exhibit times will vary as he continues to bond with his mother and acclimate to crowds.
Coquerels’ sifaka are found only on the island of Madagascar like most lemur species. Unfortunately deforestation and other human activities have seen them listed as critically endangered by the IUCN.
THE ZOO is the first series to go behind the scenes at Bronx Zoo and is now its fifth season. The show screens in the US on Animal Planet, Sunday at 9pm ET/PT.
