A pair of titi monkeys at Belfast Zoo have welcomed their sixth infant together. The coppery titi infant was born on January 17th 2022.
The pair made up of a male, Aztec and female, Inca have called Belfast Zoo home since 2010.
Aztec currently has his hands full as in titi monkeys it is the male who does most of the work to rear the infants. He carries them most of the time only passing them to Inca to nurse.
For the next 4-5 months the infant will cling to dad making it difficult for keepers to determine the gender at this time.

Key to their infant rearing success is that coppery titi monkeys are monogamous and pairs will remain together for life. A pair is often seen sleeping with intertwined tails.
Zoo curator, Julie Mansell, said “Male coppery titi monkeys make the perfect partner in the primate world as they are both faithful and caring as fathers. We first welcomed Aztec and Inca to Belfast Zoo in 2010 and they have been building their family unit ever since with the arrival of their sixth offspring. Baby is currently doing well and we are looking forward to finding out its sex in a few months.”
Native to the rainforests of South America including Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru these small primates are named for their copper colored fur.
