Keepers at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland have celebrated the first birthday of their young western chimpanzee today, Wednesday February 3rd.
Masindi and the rest of the sixteen strong chimpanzee family at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo will enjoy extra snacks to mark the special occasion.
Masindi is currently a toddler and is starting to walk independently, eat solid food and play with her older brother, Velu.

She was born on February 3rd 2020 at the zoos Budongo Trail habitat. Her birth was part of the European endangered species programme (EEP) which aims to maintain a healthy population of western chimpanzees in European zoos.
Masindis name comes from the nearest town to the Budongo Conservation Field Station in Uganda where RZSS has funded vital efforts to protect chimpanzees in the Budongo forest since 2005. This work is made possible thanks to support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
