Three male Przewalski’s wild horses have taken up residence at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo in the capital of Scotland. They arrived on August 27th 2021.
This herd is made up of three males known as Och, Tomor and Kumbish who are all three years old.
The three new arrivals made the move from the zoo’s sister site, Highland Wildlife Park and are the first Przewalski’s horses to ever call the zoo home. Highland Wildlife Park operate a successful breeding program for the species.

The Przewalski’s wild horse was brought back from extinction in the wild in the 1950s.
Jonathan Appleyard, hoofstock team leader at Edinburgh Zoo, “It is really exciting to introduce our visitors to this amazing species and share the incredible story of Przewalski’s horses being brought back from extinction in the wild following the success of rewilding and reintroduction projects in their native Mongolia.”
“This huge feat is directly attributable to the efforts of the zoo community and shows just how important a carefully managed captive population can be for safeguarding threatened wildlife around the world.”

Luckily the team report that the new arrivals have settled in well, ““After arriving yesterday, our three new boys, Och, Tomor and Kumbish, are settling in to their new home which is just beside our giraffes on the hilltop.”
Visitors to the zoo can now meet the Przewalski’s horse herd and learn about their story when visiting Edinburgh Zoo.
