Two years after they arrived at Australia Zoo guests can now meet the Sumatran elephant herd. The herd of four elephants will be able to roam the expansive Elephantasia habitat and meet guests.
Since their arrival the four females, Wati, Widya, Christine and Raflesia have become part of the family at Australia Zoo.
During 2022 that family will expand with the arrival of another elephant, Burma who will be moving from Auckland Zoo in New Zealand.

Wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin was thrilled to discuss the arrival of these magnificent animals at Australia Zoo.
“It is an incredibly exciting milestone for Australia Zoo as we welcome four beautiful Sumatran elephants in our gorgeous Elephantasia habitat, further contributing to the conservation of the critically endangered species,” Robert said.

Sumatran elephants are a threatened species with less than 2,500 remaining in the wild.
Australia Zoo have supported elephant conservation in the wild. In 2015 they contributed to funds to fulfil a dream of Steve Irwin, building an elephant hospital in Sumatra. Unfortunately a major threat to wild elephants is snares and human elephant conflict.
At the hospital elephants can receive rehabilitation and care.
