In perfect timing for Halloween a group of 50 black and white clownfish have arrived at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. They have moved in to a new anemone in the Jurassic seas exhibit where they are surprising guests with their unique features.

These fish are the same species as popular animated fish, Nemo but are a special color morph known as the Ocellaris Clownfish which is only found on the reefs of the NT in Australia. Their appearance has led to them being affectionately dubbed ‘emo nemos.’

Their appearance is not the only stunning feature of these fish. Males have the ability to change from males to females. If the dominant female dies a male will change to a female to replace her. This is a one way journey though; once they change they can’t go back.

Currently the baby clownfish measure 5cm (2in) long but as adults may reach 11cm (4.3in) long. At SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium the clownfish will become important ambassadors for the threats which are faced by wildlife especially reef bleaching.
