A Somali wild ass has become the oldest of her species to give birth in North America at Zoo Miami in Florida, USA. Mare Lisha gave birth to the foal around sunrise on the morning of March 12th 2021.

This is the 9th Somali wild ass to be born at Zoo Miami. The foal is said to be adapting well and is now on exhibit.

In the coming days a neonatal exam is planned. This will confirm the gender of the baby and gain a baseline weight, collect blood and insert a transponder for the identification of the foal in to the future.

The Somali wild ass is one of the world's most critically endangered equine species. As few as 1,000 are thought to remain in the wild. They are the last link to the modern donkey.

In the wild the species can be found in the rocky deserts of eastern Africa. They can be recognized by their smoot gray coat which contrasts against the striped legs which give away their close relation to the zebra.

Zoo Miami welcomed their first Somali wild asses in 2011 and since then have been successful in breeding them as part of a captive breeding program designed to maintain a healthy population of the species in captivity.
