Como Park Zoo’s newest addition has made her public debut. She is a giraffe calf which was born on November 25th.
The new calf has been named Skye by a Como Friends supporter who was chosen at randomn for giving a gift of over $55 on Give to the Max Day which was on November 13.
When Skye was born she was already taller than most humans at 6 feet tall. She weighed in at a whopping 65.7kg (145 pounds).
Skye is the 18th giraffe born at Como Park Zoo in the past 20 years. She is the 5th calf for her mother, Daisy. She joins the other members of the herd including her father, Skeeter and the other female Clover.
Giraffes are the tallest species on earth. They are capable of growing to be 18 feet tall. Their tongue which grows to 18 inches is prehensile allowing them to grasp stuff. Gestation last between 14 and 15 months and normally only a single calf is born. They have markings which are unique to each giraffe similar to a human fingerprint.
Over the next year Skye will double in height to 12 feet.
