Giraffe Calf Joins the Herd at Perth Zoo

The male giraffe calf born on October 2nd 2021 at the Perth Zoo

A male giraffe calf was born on October 2nd at Perth Zoo in Australia. The calf entered the world at 3.30am and has since been doted on by mother Ellie.

Ellie is a first time mother and is considered to be naturally nervous. To allow for this keepers are giving her time and space to adjust to her new life. Keepers are taking thing slowly with the new family.

At present Ellie and her calf are being kept in the giraffe nursery. Here she is learning how to nurse the calf, something which Ellie has seemed to struggle with over the first few days of life.

It’s an exciting time for Perth Zoo with this being the second giraffe born at the zoo in the past month. This also marks the first time that the zoo has had two giraffe calves at once.

Perth Zoo will announce in the future when the calf is ready to meet the public.
