Keepers at Adelaide Zoo made use of a small break in the rain this morning to celebrate the seventh birthday of their golden lion tamarin, Arella.
Arella is one of nine golden lion tamarins housed at Adelaide Zoo. She has given birth to seven children including a rare set of triplets born in 2020.
The troop were treated to a spirited party full of squeaks and plenty of chaos. The Behavioural and Environmental Enrichment of Zoo Animals (BEEZA) group created a range of treats for the troop to enjoy.

“The troop are doing really well. Arella is a great mum and deserves a treat,” said keeper Liza Solly.
“Communication is an important part of Golden Lion-Tamarins social structure, and these vocalisations are typical when there’s a change in their environment” said Liza.

Golden lion tamarins are endangered according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Less than 1,400 individuals are believed to remain in the wild.
Breeding programs such as the successful one at Adelaide Zoo have helped to ensure a future for the golden lion tamarin. Thanks to conservation support over the last 30 years their conservation status was downgraded from critically endangered to endangered.
