Lincoln Park Zoo's latest addition is certainly making a splash with keepers celebrating the birth of a gray seal pup on January 26th 2022. Born to first-time mother Jersey keepers unfortunately had to intervene after it became clear she was not caring for the pup.

Since then the healthy, male pup has been given round the clock care by keepers at the zoo. They have been supported by the experts from the Association of Zoos’ and Aquariums (AZA) Grey Seal Species Survival Plan® (SSP) who have helped ensure he passes critical milestones. He will continue being cared for behind the scenes while he gains weight and strength.

“We remain cautiously optimistic as the pup navigates toward weaning, or the advancement to solid foods, which typically happens around three weeks of age,” said Curator of Mammals Mike Murray. “The pup’s progress thus far is a testament to the dedication of the Animal Care and Veterinary staff.”

The pup was named Fisher by the zoo in memory of the late Dr. Fisher, who was a Chicago icon and staple of the Lincoln Park Zoo family as both a veterinarian and zoo director. His name also honors the veterinarians providing 24/7 care to the pup.

Seals give birth on land after an 11 month gestation period.

Mother Jersey produced the pup with male Charles following a recommendation from the Grey Seal Species Survival Plan® (SSP), a collaborative population management effort among AZA institutions.
