Taronga Zoo Sydney have introduced Humphrey, an adorable 8 month old koala joey who has recently emerged from mom’s pouch. Currently the joey is climbing in and out of his mother’s pouch but in a few short months will be too big to fit.
Currently the joey is estimated to be 8months old with the first six months of his life having been spent in mom’s pouch suckling on milk.
Humphrey is the first koala to be born at Taronga Zoo Sydney in over a year. Each joey born as part of the breeding program at Taronga Zoo is important with scientists suggesting the species could go extinct by 2050.

Taronga Zoo gave the honor of naming the precious joey to a long time supporter of their foundation. This donor helps to make Taronga’s ongoing conservation and threatened species work possible.
Keepers at Taronga Zoo Sydney report that mom and joey are incredibly well. Senior Koala Keeper Laura Jones revealed that the joey “is already beginning to attempt to eat eucalyptus leaves and is hanging on really tight to mums back”.

Humphrey and his mom Willow have recently gone on display at the Koala Encounter Exhibit. This area allows guests to get up close to the koalas.
Willow is an experienced mother having welcomed four previous joey’s. She has made an important contribution to the breeding program for this threatened species at Taronga Zoo Sydney.
