Dolly, Polly and Prisicilla the Galapagos giant tortoises have enjoyed a housewarming party thrown by their keepers as they prepare for the opening of their new habitat on October 9th.

Under a colorful housewarming banner the three tortoises were treated to a banquet of juicy watermelon.

Since they made their move to the new habitat on Tuesday September 7th the trio have been given privacy to settle in and explore the range of mod cons which have been incorporated in to the space.

Come Saturday though the group will welcome guests in to the immersive new indoor habitat to see them.

ZSL herpetologist Dr Chris Michaels said: “Dolly, Polly and Priscilla have very much enjoyed investigating everything their new home has to offer over the past few weeks – Dolly is a particular fan of some self-care in the muddy wallow, while Polly likes to treat herself to a cooling soak in the lagoon pool.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors inside the new exhibit for the first time this Saturday, where they’ll be able to see our giant trio in their new home and learn more about the pristine world of the Galápagos archipelago.”

The tortoises will have a long time to enjoy their new abode. The three tortoises are currently 26 years old and could be expected to live to over 100.

Their new habitat will give visitors an insight in to life on the famous archipelago and allow them to explore how a hatchling the size of a hamster grows to become the world's largest tortoise.
