Keepers at the Australian Reptile Park have captured the moment a kangaroo joey popped its head out of the pouch for the first time. The joey still doesn’t have any fur but was eager for a look at the big wide world which it will soon be hopping around.
Since their first sighting of the joey keepers say it is becoming more and more confident each day. It can be seen admiring its surroundings while mom munches on grass at the wildlife park located on Australia’s central coast.
Mum Ollie is well known around the park for her habit of attempting to sneak in to visitors picnic baskets.

Australian Reptile Park Director Tim Faulkner says “It’s always exciting to hear we have a new joey in the Park – especially the kangaroos! As we get further into spring, we’re expecting to see more and more joeys poking their heads out of the pouches!”
Mr Faulkner continued, “It’s only a matter of time now before the joey makes the big leap of faith and takes its first hops!”

Keepers are yet to determine the gender of the joey or a name. They are still eager to hear name suggestions on their instagram and facebook ready for when they do name it.
The joey is a Kangaroo Island Kangaroo which can only be found in the wild on one island off the coast of South Australia. At the park a large mob of them interact with guests each day. Eventually the joey will leave the pouch and be available for guests to pat and hold.
