Klipspringer Calf Springs to Life at Brevard Zoo

A klipspringer calf which has been born at the Brevard Zoo in Florida

On April 15th 2021 the Brevard Zoo in Florida celebrated the birth of a klipspringer calf. This tiny antelope weighed just 27.5oz (800g) at birth. As an adult it will grow to a maximum weight of 40lbs (18kg).
Four-year-old mother Deborah gave birth to the calf in the evening of April 15th. The father of the calf is six-year-old Ajabu.

Keepers report that the calf appears to be in good health and is nursing well. The as yet unnamed calf will spend several weeks bonding with Deborah behind the scenes.
The Brevard Zoo run a successful breeding program for the klipspringer. They have welcomed nine calves in their history.

Klipspringer antelopes are found in sub-Saharan Africa. They are known for their surefootedness and can move easily across the rocky terrain they call home.
These antelopes tend to give birth to one calf at a time.
Currently no major threats are faced by this species. They are occasionally hunted for their meat and hide.
