The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland have announced the birth of twin large hairy armadillos at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo. These twins were born five weeks ago to parents Nymeria and Diogo.
Recently the pups underwent their first health with vets at the Scottish attraction who were able to determine that they are both males. Keepers have decided on the names, Pedro Pascal and Montezuma for the pups after the actor and Aztec emperor respectively. During the check the pups were also weighed for the first time.
Currently the pups are dependent on their mother and spend most of their time tucked safely away in the burrow.
In coming weeks guests may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the pups as they begin to explore the enclosure.
For Nymeria and Diogo this is their second litter having welcomed a single pup, Wyatt in May 2022.
The large hairy anteater is found on the grasslands, forests and savannas of South America.
RZSS work on the ground in South America with ICAS since 2010 to protect giant armadillos and giant anteaters and their habitats in Brazil. Visitors coming to see the armadillo pups support conservation of wild armadillos through their admission fee.
Giant hairy armadillos are adept diggers which will create a burrow in which they can seek shelter during the day or if threatened by a predator. Much of their food is also scavenged by digging below the surface.
