Monarto Safari Park have welcomed a new addition to their breeding herd of Plains Zebra. The latest foal was born on December 23rd 2021.
Already the little one is out and about exploring its new surroundings and zipping and zooming around mother Thembela.
This is the fourth calf for Thembela with the father being Storm. The new arrival brings the zebra herd at Monarto Safari Park to 19 members.
Keeper, Paul Riley, said the team were very excited to hear the pitter-patter of tiny hooves across the park.
“It was very exciting for us to have a Zebra foal born over Christmas,” he said. “We don’t know the sex yet, but we have loved seeing the foal playing and exploring.”

The new arrival is currently off display. It was born in the under construction Wild Africa precinct. This major expansion of the park will open in 2022 and include safari experiences, luxury accommodation and glamping experiences.
One stage has already been completed and was named Etosha after Etosha National Park in Namibia. This area is now home to the zebra herd along with Scimitar-horned Oryx, Blackbuck, Ostrich, Waterbuck and Eland.
Other species to be housed in wild Africa include giraffe, zebra, Nyala, and Southern White Rhino.
2022 will be a big year for Monarto Safari Park with construction also nearing completion on their new visitor center which is due to open in March.
