It’s been a birthday bonanza this week at Monarto Safari Park in South Australia. Keepers were kept busy celebrating the birthdays of six animals including three African lions, two giraffes and a chimpanzee infant.
The biggest celebration took place at the chimp platform where they celebrated the birthday of 5 year old chimpanzee infant Enzi. The troop marked his birthday with enrichment, snacks and decorations.
Enzi was born in May 2015 to mom Zombi. On seeing his treats he raced out in to the exhibit before settling on a platform in the sun to enjoy some presents filled with nuts and seeds. His exhibit had been filled with streamers, presents and a range of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Across the park African lion brother’s, Kashka, Kubwa and Kito celebrated their birthday early. The trio were born on October 20th.
Despite the lure of colored balls and shapes filled with turkey mince the brothers chose to remain in their dens and be hand-feed treats from their keepers. This was welcomed by the females in the pride along with four cubs born earlier this year. They took the opportunity to enjoy the treats for themselves.
The final birthday celebrations were for two giraffes. Kinky will turn 21 on Friday and Tambo will turn 20 on Wednesday.
Kinky is a well known member of the Monarto Safari Park family as she has a kink in her neck due to her mother sitting down while giving birth.
Despite this tough start to life Kinky has gone on to become an integral member of the herd and has raised many calves in her 21 years.

Along with being a fun way to mark these animals special day the birthday celebrations are an important part of these animals care plan.
Delivering food in new and exciting ways helps to make the animals think differently and encourages natural behaviors.
