Madagascar hissing cockroaches are as their name suggests found on the island of Madagascar. They can reach lengths up to 10cm (4in) long. Their namesake hissing sound is created as a defense mechanism.
Unlike other roach species they are not considered a pest species and are not known to regularly enter houses.

Since its launch in 2011 the original name-a-roach has allowed thousands of people to symbolically adopt their own hissing cockroach. Previously selected names have been inspired by politics, movies, music and more.
Thousands of super-sized Madagascar hissing cockroaches live at the Bronx Zoo’s Madagascar! exhibit. Here guests can also meet lemurs, crocodiles and other species found on the island off of Africa’s coast.
