Penzi an African elephant calf at the Reid Park Zoo has celebrated her first birthday with keepers throwing a party for her and the herd. She was a symbol of hope with her birth coming at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The not so little calf tipped the scales at 504kg (1,110lbs). She was able to celebrate her birthday with a large cake formed from ice and topped with watermelon candles.

Elsewhere in the exhibit they enjoyed lots of enrichment and snacks.
Her keepers and fans also didn’t miss out on the celebrations. They were able to celebrate with cupcakes donated by Cakes for Causes and Craft Culinary Concepts, music by Africa Diaspora Showcase, and a beautiful song courtesy of Tucson Symphony Orchestra.
