Six painted dog puppies born at Perth Zoo in March have been given their first health check. The check allowed keepers and vets to get their first hands-on look at the pups.

The pups are the first for a new pair which is formed of adult female 'Muhumhi' who was born at Perth Zoo and male 'Gibby' who was born at a zoo in South Australia.

A this week's health check keepers were able to provide the pups with a vaccination and determine their gender. They found that the litter is made up of five males and one female.

Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said, "The birth of six African Painted Puppies is cause for celebration and testament to the world renowned expertise here at Perth Zoo."

Perth Zoo work as part of the Australasian breeding program for the species, "The team co-ordinates the regional zoo breeding program for all Australian and New Zealand zoos, with the aim of breeding a healthy zoo population of African Painted Dogs to insure against wild extinction," added Sanderson.

Painted dogs are considered to be among the most endangered animals in Africa. In the wild they are threatened by poaching, habitat destruction and the human wildlife conflict.

While Perth Zoo conduct breeding work at home they also support conservation work in the wild. This is achieved through funding an anti-poaching patrol unit and snare removal.

Sanderson finished, "“With less than 6,500 of these animals in the wild, there is a real risk of this species going extinct in our lifetime, making zoo breeding programs more important than ever.”
