San Diego Zoo have introduced the latest addition to their giraffe herd. The now 5 week old calf has been named Mawe.
Mawe is a Swahili word which means ‘stones.’

Scientists estimate that as few as 100,000 giraffe remain in the wild. Their populations have decreased by as much as 40% over the last 20 years.
Their decline has been accelerated by habitat loss and fragmentation along with poaching.
San Diego Wildlife Alliance have partnered with conservation organizations on large-scale conservation efforts which are hoping to cease the decline of giraffe numbers in the wild.
