SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium in Victoria, Australia is celebrating its 11th gentoo penguin breeding season with the hatching of several chicks.

The chicks were born just before SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium re-opened after Victoria’s lockdown. Each pair of penguins carefully prepared a nest of pebbles on which they could lay their eggs.

Some of the stand out parents from this season are first time parents Zeus and Roger along with foster parents Mouse and Lamington.

Along with great care from their parents the chicks also receive a daily check by keepers to ensure they are growing well.

“We absolutely love this time of year when we welcome babies into the colony! Gentoo penguins are known for their playful and curious characters, so we have decided to let the chicks’ “penguinalities” shine through before choosing the most adorable and appropriate names,” said Sarina Walsh, Bird Manager at SEA LIFE Melbourne.

Visitors to the SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium can meet the gentoo penguin colony and their chicks. They share their home with the larger king penguins.

The aquarium reopened on November 13th with capacity limits and strict healthy and safety measures in place.
