RZSS Edinburgh Zoo have shared the first adorable images of their L’Hoest’s Monkey infant born earlier this month. Parents Sheli and Jamal welcomed their bundle of joy on May 8th 2023.
In coming weeks keepers and vets will conduct their first health check on the infant to ensure it is in perfect health. Following this they will decide on a suitable name for the infant.
At present the new arrival is most commonly seen clinging tight to mom, Sheli. With each day it is becoming more confident. Guests visiting the Scottish attraction may be able to spot the baby with its mother among the monkey family. The new arrival stands out due to its orange fur which will darken to match those of the adults over the next three months.
This is the second infant born to Sheli and Jamal in 2020. This infant was named Butembo.
Deforestation and hunting have led to a decline in the population of the L’Hoest’s monkey in their native Africa. This has led to them being listed as ‘vulnerable’ on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species
With almost 400 species of primate discovered on Earth you’re sure to find one you like in our fact file.
