Keepers at Twycross Zoo in the United Kingdom have celebrated this week as Ernie, the black-headed spider monkey celebrated his birthday. Ernie is the youngest member of the eight critically endangered spider monkey’s housed at Twycross Zoo.

Doting parents, Jamundi and Monty welcomed their infant in November last year and has settled in to become a popular member of the troop.

Neil Dorman, Curator at Twycross Zoo, said: “In what has been one of the most challenging years in our long history, Ernie’s birthday has been a positive and cements the critical work of zoos in preserving the world’s rarest species.

“We’re now very excited for the next few years seeing Ernie continue his development and we hope one day in the future he can play a vital role in helping this species thrive and grow,” finished Dorman.

The black-headed spider monkey is listed as critically endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Their main threat is habitat loss which has led to a significant decline in their numbers.
