Taronga Western Plains Zoo Introduce Zebra Foal

A zebra foal was born in to the herd at Taronga Western Plains Zoo on April 3rd 2022

A zebra foal was born at Taronga Western Plains Zoo on April 3rd 2022. The adorable foal joins the herd ahead of the school holidays. Keepers were delighted to find the foal which had been born overnight to mother Kijani. By the time they arrived it was up and about.

Guests visiting the zoo this school holidays will not only meet the zebra foal but also a quokka joey and a 5 month old greater one horned rhinoceros calf.

Keeper Anthony Dorian said: “Within an hour of being born, the little foal was up and active, immediately imprinting onto its mother. Kijani and the foal are doing well and the little filly is finding its legs.

”Guests can expect to see the little foal suckling from mum, practicing its running and jumping and having many well-earned naps in the beautiful Dubbo sunshine.

“Kijani is a very protective mother, keeping the foal away from the others, often putting her body in between the calf and the herd”.

“The calf is milk dependent and hasn’t yet started grazing. It is most active in the mornings, having short bursts of energy before collapsing into the grass for a nap”.

A zebra foal is born after a 12-13 month gestation period. At Taronga Western Plains Zoo you can find three zebra herds with the foal being part of the breeding herd which live just after the elephant habitat.

You can also find a bachelor herd next to the giraffe family and a small herd which live on the savannha.
