Taronga Zoo Sydney have announced the names for their twin red panda cubs born in early December.

Taronga's Carnivore Keepers worked closely with some special partners and agreed on the names Daiyu - which means 'black jade' and Zeya meaning success.

Both names are taken from languages spoken in the native range of the red panda. Daiyu is of Chinese origin and Zeya of Burmese origin.

Black stone is said to have characteristics of power and protection. Keepers say this is a perfect fit for Daiyu who despite being smaller than her sister is much more confident when climbing trees. Zeya is slightly lighter and fluffier than Daiyu.

Both continue to grow each day and are gaining confidence and strength.

In recent weeks the family have begun to take more frequent trips away from the nest accompanied by their mother. As rains begin to settle in Sydney it is expected that the pair will make more frequent trips out of the nest.

Keepers have started to transition the cubs off their mother's milk on to solid food starting with panda porridge which is a mix of milk and panda bars.
