Taronga Zoo has announced the arrival of their two newest residents. Camels Ras and Storm have moved to the city from Taronga Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo.
Storm is the elder of the pair at 19 years old and can be told apart from 16 year old, Ras due to his darker coat.

The pair have been settling in at Taronga Zoo with keepers noting that one of their favorite activities is enjoying a sit or roll in the sand followed by a good brushing.
Dromerday camels feature a range of adaptations which help them to survive in arid environments. The most famous of these is their hump which can store fat which can be turned in to water and energy allowing them to go 10 months without water.

When they do find water they may drink as much as 100L in just 10 minutes.
Their eyes also feature long lashes to protect against sand blowing in to them and nostrils which can shut to prevent the entry of sand.
