Tulsa Zoo have announced a big addition to their family with a male southern white rhinoceros calf being born on November 7th 2021.
Mother Sally welcomed her calf in to the herd at 12.24pm. Within an hour of birth the calf took its first steps and was nursing within two hours.
To give the new family time to bond mother and calf will remain behind the scenes in the barn at the Mary K. Chapman Rhino Reserve.

“Our zookeepers and veterinary staff are monitoring both Sally and her calf closely. We’re happy to report both animals are doing very well,” said Zoological Curator of Mammals Jordan Piha. “Sally is an experienced, attentive mother, so we’re looking forward to witnessing the calf grow and thrive here.”
Sally has had a long wait to welcome her calf with a white rhino gestation being 16 to 18 months. In fact during this time Sally moved to Tulsa arriving in October 2020.
The father of the calf is known as Kengele and lives at The Wilds. This calf has been born as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan®. Sally has a reccommendation to breed with the resident male at Tulsa Zoo, Rudo.
