The animals at Twycross Zoo received some pumpkin treats to get in the spirit of the spookiest time of the year. Some of Twycross Zoo’s most popular species were given the treats on National Pumpkin Day as part of their enrichment program.

Animals large and small were able to enjoy the treats. Sumatran tiger Jahaly enjoyed exploring his pumpkin in which keepers had hidden a joint of beef. The meerkat mob explored through their pumpkin to locate some mealworms.

Matthew Cleverley, Team Leader of Mammals and Birds at Twycross Zoo, said: “Halloween is always a special time here at Twycross Zoo and our keepers have been enjoying giving some of our animals a spooky treat in the form of a carved pumpkin!

“For those who are visiting this half term they might be able to spot more spooky enrichment with other animals around the zoo, as well as enjoy all of what Boo at the Zoo has to offer!” added Cleverley.

Enrichment is an important part of any animals day at Twycross Zoo. These activities promotes good animal welfare, it increases physical and mental activity levels, and encourages natural behaviors such as foraging. These activities also help to activate all 5 senses of the animals.

Visitors to Twycross Zoo can experience Boo at the Zoo until November 1st which includes a range of COVID-SECURE Halloween activities.
