Keepers at Twycross Zoo have celebrated the third birthday of their endangered black rhino, Sudan.
Sudan is celebrating his first birthday at Twycross Zoo where he moved in September. His arrival was part of the European breeding program for his species.
Since he arrived at Twycross Zoo Sudan has become a huge hit and is beloved both by keepers and visitors. To show their appreciation for this incredible animal he was treated to a cake made out of dry food and Lucerne. This was topped with three carrot and swede ‘birthday candles.’
Laura Slater, Large Mammals Keeper at Twycross Zoo, said: “We’re all super-excited to be celebrating Sudan’s third birthday. He’s been an absolute pleasure right from the day he arrived.”

“Sudan is so important to our conservation mission, due to the dwindling numbers of Black rhino in the wild. In the future we hope he can play a huge part in our breeding programme for the Eastern black rhino and help to preserve the species for many years to come.”
The black rhino was once the most common rhino species but their population has reduced by 98% in recent years. This was mainly a result of hunting for their horn. Conservation work in recent years has helped their numbers to grow but they are still incredibly threatened. These animals still require a large amount of help to ensure their survival.
