All three piglets are females. They were born to 7 year old Eleanor and 2 year old father Hamlet.
Since she gave birth Eleanor has shown all of the appropriate maternal behaviors and is proving to be a protective mother. Currently she is bonding with the piglets in an off-display area.

“We are thrilled to welcome warthog piglets to Eleanor and Hamlet and to our African Savanna,” said Jennifer Mickelberg, PhD, Vice President of Collections and Conservation.
“The African Savanna highlights the interconnectedness of all life. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate that connection than with new life.”

These warthog piglets are the first born at Zoo Atlanta since 2014. In 2014 Eleanor was born at the zoo to her late parents Shirley and Vern. Hamlet came to Zoo Atlanta to join Eleanor in October 2020.
Warthogs are increasingly threatened in their habitat of sub-Sharan Africa. These include drought, desertification and habitat loss or fragmentation.
