A long wait is over for staff at Toronto Zoo with Tori, a ten year old female Grevy’s zebra giving birth. The male foal was born during the early hours of the morning on Tuesday December 1st. The foal weighed 52.1kg (114.9lbs) at birth.
The father of the calf is thirteen year old, Jake. This is the fifth foal for Jake and the fourth for Tori. This birth is a recommendation of the Grevy’s Zebra Species Survival Plan (SSP). The birth will increase the representation of Jake’s genetics in the captive zebra population.

“We are so pleased to welcome this healthy and energetic foal to your Toronto Zoo and be contributing to the population of this endangered species,” says Dolf DeJong, CEO, Toronto Zoo. “With only 3000 individuals remaining in the wild, this is a great example of the critical work done by our world class wildlife care team at the Toronto Zoo to protect this species,” he added.

Grevy’s zebra are listed as endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List. Their numbers have declined due to habitat loss, competition with livestock and poaching.
Toronto Zoo provide support for the population of Grevy’s zebra both through their captive conservation program and supporting field conservation projects for the species.
