Six wild dog puppies born at Monarto Safari Park seven weeks ago have visited the vet for their first health check.

During the check each pup was given a general physical examination and was vaccinated, wormed and microchipped. Vets also took photos of their markings for future identification. Each pup has different patterns across the body which can be used to tell the six apart.

Another result of the health check was long awaited by keepers, finding out the pups genders. This revealed that the pack now has four more girls and two additional boys.

Zoos SA Veterinarian Jerome Kalvas says the puppies all look to be in tip top shape. “We’re really pleased to see these pups growing so well.”

“They’re all in great condition and are healthy weights so we’re very happy,” added Jerome.

Soon after the checks were concluded the pups were returned to the den where they were born to mom, Bulu in late April. They are becoming more adventurous each day and are often seen playing outside.

African wild dogs are threatened in Africa with only 7,000 animals thought to remain in highly fragmented populations.

They are one of Africa’s most successful hunters. Working as a pack they are successful in 80% of hunts compared to 30% for lions.

Zoos SA work to support organizations like the Zambian Carnivore Program, Painted Dog Conservation Inc and Sera Wildlife Conservancy as they fight poaching and protect the habitat of this species on their home continent.
