Xiao Qi Ji the giant panda cub at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo is about to begin on his next adventure. The now 8 month old cub will soon begin his training program with keepers which will allow him to voluntarily participate in his own healthcare.
Giant pandas at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are trained in behaviors which mean keepers can monitor their health and examine them up close. Currently mother Mei Xiang and father Tian Tian will place their body parts so keepers can collect blood or administer a vaccine. If they choose to participate they receive special treats.

Xiao Qi Ji made his latest culinary review this week as he tried his mom’s favorite treat, diluted honey water, this week. This one received rave reviews with the cub squeezing in next to mom in an attempt to get more.
As he approaches 8 months old the cub is now enjoying many of the same foods in his parents diet. These include bamboo, sweet potato, fiber biscuits, pears and apples.
His healthy diet has allowed him to reach 18.6kg (41lbs) at his latest weigh in on April 28th.

Xiao Qi Ji’s personality is beginning to shine through. As he grows up he is now less reliant on his mother, Mei Xiang. He has begun to spend much of his day outside though does like to come in with mom for their mid-day nap.
He has also found a new favorite tree which he likes to climb up to nap. Unfortunately the tree is not visible on the Panda Cam so if he is missing he’s likely having a nap.
