On August 21st the Smithsonian National Zoo welcomed the birth of a giant panda cub. Mum Mei Xiang gave birth to the healthy cub at 6.35pm.
Currently Mei Xiang is raising the cub in the privacy of her den. The cub is tiny, about the size of a stick of butter.
While it will be a few months before the cub starts to explore outside the panda cam allows you to watch all the important milestones in the cubs life live.

Thanks to the wonders of technology everyone is able to get a glimpse of the new family. A camera has been set up in the den allowing keepers to watch over them without disturbance and the feed broadcasts live on line to share the wonder of visitors.
In the days since the birth Mei Xiang has shown brilliant care for the infant. Keepers report that she has nursed the cub and is settling in to a routine with the cub.
