Lincoln Park Zoo celebrated the birth of a Grevy’s zebra foal to mother Adia on August 21st 2023. Zookeepers have confirmed that the foal is doing well and is a female. They are yet to determine a name for the foal.
Keepers had been awaiting the birth since confirming Adia’s pregnancy with a hormone test earlier this year. A zebra pregnancy on average lasts 390 days.
This is the fifth foal for experienced mother, Adia and the third for father, Wester. There are now four zebra in the herd at the zoo’s zebra and camel area.
“It’s amazing to see the population of these endangered zebras continue to grow,” said Curator Dan Boehm. “Mom and foal are hitting all of their postpartum milestones and the newborn is quite spirited and very active.”
Within hours of birth the foal was able to run on its own. It will require the support of mom for the next 7 months.
Grevy’s zebra are considered endangered with their numbers reduced to just 2,000 through habitat loss and hunting. The breeding of Adia and Wester is part of the Grevy’s Zebra Species Survival Plan (SSP), a collaborative population management effort among the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) institutions.

A baby zebra is known as a foal. Females separate from the herd and spend a short term making sure the foal can recognize their mother so it will follow her when they return to the herd.
