A new warthog has moved in at Zoo Atlanta. Hamlet, a 19 month old male warthog made the move to Atlanta from Houston Zoo. In his new home he will live in the all new African savanna exhibit.
At Zoo Atlanta Hamlet will be a companion for six-year old female, Eleanor. Currently Hamlet is settling in and he may or may not be visible for guests at the zoo.
“We’re excited to introduce Hamlet to the African Savanna. Warthogs are animals that many people consider iconic to a legendary part of Africa,” said Jennifer Mickelberg, PhD, Vice President of Collections and Conservation. “The animals that are part of this environment are all emblematic of the connectedness of this ecosystem – and of the connections between us here in Atlanta and the future of Africa’s wild savannas.”
Opened in August 2019 the African savanna exhibit provided expanded homes for African elephants, giraffes, zebra, ostrich and meerkats. Hamlet is the second new animal welcomed to the savanna recently after a 9 year old southern white rhinoceros arrived in May.

Warthogs can be found in sub-Saharan Africa and are currently considered common. Their populations are declining due to drought, desertification, and human-caused habitat loss and habitat fragmentation.
They are one of the more adaptable animals in this environment and can live with some human disturbance.
