Zoo Babies-Rare C-section on a gorilla

A rare C-section has been performed on a gorilla at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This was the first baby for gorilla Imani. She began to show initial signs of labour Wednesday. This was closely monitored by keepers and vets from the safari park. By the next morning she showed no further signs of labour and by that evening she had progressed no further. It was at this time the decision was made to perform a c-section.

Nadine Lamberski, the associate director of veterinary services at the Safari Park said that “In retrospect the c-section was the right decision,” she went on to state that “We think the health of the fetus would have been compromised if we delayed the surgery any longer”

After the birth she was put on oxygen and supplemental fluids in the vet center due to some birth complications. She is now stable. Imani recovered in the comfort of her bedroom. She is now one of 8 gorillas residing at the Safari Park.

She was the 15th gorilla to ever be born at the Safari Park
