Zoo Babies-Taronga Zoo Tree Kangaroo

This little cutie is a baby tree kangaroo who is just beginning to poke her head out of the pouch since being born in September. This girl is so young that she is still yet to even receive a name. She is the first of her kind to born at Taronga Zoo in Sydney in 20 years.

These tree kangaroos are part of an international breeding program which aims to save their species from extinction. They come from Papua New Guinea. Currently they are listed as endangered with the last 30 years seeing a 50% population decrease for this species. They are related to kangaroos and inhabit trees.

As part of the breeding program Parum the zoos breeding male was introduced to female Qwikilas who arrived in Sydney from Belfast in 2013.

The zoo has announced its intention to hold a contest to find a name for the little one.
