Yang Guang the giant panda has celebrated his 20th birthday at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo. This is set to be the last birthday the panda will celebrate in the United Kingdom with he and female, Tian Tian set to return to China later this year.
To mark the occasion keepers treated him to a box full of carrots, bamboo, apples and panda cake*. The box had been decorated by children being supported by the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (ECHC).
Female Tian Tian will celebrate her birthday later this year and will be treated to a similar present.
RZSS are working to improve access to nature within 100 communities by 2030. As part of this work they offers free tickets to families with children being treated at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young people.
Planning is underway alongside colleagues from the China Wildlife Conservation Association to plan Yang Guang and Tian Tian’s return to China which could be as early as the end of October 2023. It is too soon to say exactly when they will travel
*Panda cake is a nutrition supplement used in many zoos to supplement the diet of giant pandas.
